What do kids fight over? The typical response is “Money”. However, this is not statistically true. In fact, the kids rarely fight over the money. What they typically fight over is how to take care of their parents. One child thinks Mom wants one thing and another child thinks Mom wants to be taken care of another way. So what happens, they will fight to the death to make sure Mom gets taken care of the way she wanted to be cared for. What I am sure of is that what Mom did not want was her kids fighting and taking each other to court. The best way to prevent this is for Mom to leave not just the authority to take care of her but instructions as to how to be taken care of. That is why a Health Care Proxy that just gives the authority to make decisions without any instructions is merely a document and not a plan.
